Chinese president meets Dominican counterpart

Chinese President Hu Jintao met on Friday with President of the Commonwealth of Dominica Nicholas Liverpool, who is in Beijing to attend the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games.

China and Dominica have maintained sound and stable growth of friendly relations in the past four years since they clinched diplomatic ties, said Hu.

"The two countries have maintained high-level contacts, deepened mutual political trust, carried out fruitful cooperation in diverse fields, and supported each other and enhanced coordination in international and multilateral affairs," he said.

Hu said China cherishes the friendly relations with Dominica, an important country in the eastern Caribbean, and is ready to work with Dominica to keep expanding exchanges and cooperation in diverse fields and achieve common development and prosperity.

Liverpool thanked China for its support and assistance to Dominica over the years, vowed to keep to the one-China policy and hoped the two countries keep expanding all-round cooperation.

During the meeting Hu also expressed gratitude for the Dominican government's support for the Beijing Games.

Calling Liverpool a "senior statesman" and "old friend of the Chinese people", Hu said the Dominican president has always treated relations with China from strategic high, kept to the one-China policy and done immense work to promote the friendly cooperation between the two countries.

"China highly appreciates these efforts," Hu added.

Liverpool arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for the Games.
